Golf returns to the Olympic Games

One more sleep. Tomorrow August 11, golf will make its return to the Olympic Games.

It will be the first time the sport has been part of the games since 1904. With two events – both men’s and women’s individual. A total of 60 players of each gender from 41 nations will be competing for the gold medal at the Campo Olímpico de Golfe, built specifically for the in 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

After over a hundred years of absence from the event that most would consider the pinnacle of world sport, some of the world’s best golfers will be in Rio, battling for air-time. As their fans, friends and at times family, sit at home watching Michael Phelps extend his dominance. Not many will know exactly when the golf will be playing on Channel 7. Although anybody that follows the coverage may have memorised the commentary for Phelp’s 200 metre butterfly win, where he claimed his twenty-first Olympic gold medal swimming for the USA. He has already won his 19th and 20th gold medal this week as part of the men’s American relay team, where his achievement’s on the medal tally far outshone anything else in his team, including Ryan Lochte peroxide glowing hair.

Unfortunately the world’s top 4 ranked golfers – Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Rory Mcllroy, as well another 13 players ranked in the top 100 have pulled out. Most citing busy schedules on the tour as more important than the chance be an Olympian.

The world number 5, Swedish golfer Henrik Stenson is the favourite to win a medal, followed by world number 11, Spain’s Sergio Garcia and world number 12, England’s Justin Rose.

Australia will be represented by Marcus Fraser and Scott Hend in the men’s individual, and Minjee Lee and Su Oh in the women’s.

Do you think your little one has what it take to represent the country one day? Bring them down to Pittwater Golf Centre for a lesson with our PGA Certified trainers. Or maybe you would like to bring them down to driving range or mini golf course to teach them to swing yourself. We are open 7 days a week and are able to accommodate, past, present and future Olympians.
